Glass Beach

Thursday May 31, 2007
Up in Mendocino County just outside of the town of Fort Bragg, Glass Beach is aptly named. In a little cove, you'll find a beachcomber's bonanza: instead of sea shells or driftwood, it's littered with glass. The Fort Bragg city dump once stood here. It closed in the 1960s, but broken glass remained. Don't worry about hurting yourself; the ocean has ground and polished it to a beautiful, soft texture, creating one of the most unusual beach scenes in the entire state.

Just to let everyone know. There is no doubt that as of June 2007 Glass beach has been – for two years now – a state park. Unfortunately, there will be no more collections of glass or anything else from this area… most likely ever again. So, come and look… but the Chamber of Commerce in Fort Bragg says that you can’t take anything home! That’s the news.

I visited Glass Beach just last summer (2007) and to my disappointment, there wasn’t much glass to be found. Do not get me wrong! Glass was there, but very little and you had to really search and dig around to find it. I still recommend going though, the beach and sights are breathtakingly beautiful and worth seeing.

I went to Glass Beach today. It was absolutely beautiful. Very glassy/glossy! The left beach contained more pieces than the right side, but unfortunately there were glass bandits stealing the stones and storing them in zip-top baggies. It was shocking. Anybody stopping in Ft. Bragg should definitely take the time out to see this spectacle! Beautiful!

I used to live in willits, its about half an hour drive inland, but I used to go to glass beach once or twice a month sometimes more, there was glass all over the beach. now, I did take some glass in a small vile (about an inch tall and a half an inch around) at the time I had no notion of our impact on our environment, but going back in 2008 for thanksgiving to show my wife misty,(a huge rock buff)glass beach was mind numbing, it looked nothing like what it used to.picked clean comes to mind.if we dont stop,it wont be long before the locals will be saying “you remember glass beach, man that place was cool”
