Big Sur After the Fires
No doubt you've seen the news coverage of the fire that raged through Big Sur. Several people have written to ask us about upcoming trips, wondering if it would still be worthwhile to drive down the California coast, with "everything burned up." As soon as Hwy 1 re-opened yesterday, we took a drive down to survey the situation.
The most striking aspect of California's Big Sur coast is the rocky, wave-splashed shoreline, a landscape unaffected by forest fires. Elsewhere, the fire burned down to the landward side of the highway in some places, leaving scorched trees and undergrowth, A couple of scorched hillsides were also visible The good news for visitors is that it's unlikely to diminish you enjoyment of the scenery.
Some of the state parks are still being used by fire crews who continue to work to contain the blaze in the back country and closed to the public, but all of the hotels and restaurants are also open for business. After a forced closure during the time when many of them earn a large proportion of their annual income, they are anxious for visitors to return. If you're planning a trip, don't hesitate to take it. If you live in the area, why not head down to our favorite Nepenthe or any of your favorite Big Sur spots to help show them your support?

In 10 days we (a family of 4) be flying to SFO for a ´once in a life time´ round trip. Highway 1 being one of the main attractions to me. How relieved I was to read your comment - visiting Cal Fire frequently but missing the practical meaning for ‘just another tourist’. Be sure we wil be visiting Big Sur restaurants. Thanks!!!
