The Fires Are OUT
I'll try again to explain the current situation. According to Cal Fire as of the moment I'm writing this midday on July 22, 2008, only 33 of 2,000-plus fires are still active. Those that are still burning are more than 80% contained and most are nearly out. Ash is not falling from the air. The sky is clear in most of the state, but smoke still lingers in the far north (Trinity and Humboldt Counties), an area only lightly visited by tourists. If you don't believe me, take a look at some of the webcams we link to and see for yourself.
If you're reading this any time after July 22, check the California Air Resources Board for current conditions.

Hello,
I am headed to one of those area’s “only lightly visited by tourists” and was wondering if you could give me some more information on the air quality and fire conditions.
My family has plans to travel up Interstate 5 to Redding, then head West on 299, up Hwy 3 to Hayfork on Monday, July 28th. This is our annual trip and we would hate to miss it but don’t want to be in poor conditions either.
Thanks for any information you can share.
