USS Midway Museum
The USS Midway Museum, sits on the San Diego waterfront, between the cruise ship terminal and Seaport Village.
A big ship may not immediately seem like a high tech attraction, but it's a great place for the intellectually curious. On board the USS Midway, you can learn about life on a Navy ship and how planes land and take off from an aircraft carrier. Visitors can tour many of the USS Midway working areas and see more than 15 restored aircraft. Volunteer docents, many who either served on the USS Midway or are former Navy pilots, provide live talks about the catapult and other operations.

I’ve seen movies about life aboard ship, but you can’t truly appreciate it until you take the self-guided part of the tour. My hubby & I became seperated, but it’s not like I wouldn’t know where to find him. He even tried to use his cell to find out how far back I was. Of course, he couldn’t get a signal. But my biggest shock came when I got to engineering & started to walk up. I spotted the stenciled writing on the “wall” that pointed out the water line. It took a sec before my mind registered, w/ a shock, that I had been, essentially, walking underwater for awhile. Claustophobes need not apply! Also, I realized that I’d started the tour on the starboard side & came up on the port side. And there was still another part of the tour that started farther back on the hanger deck, once again on the starboard side. I was too pooped to start that part of the tour, so we hiked up to the flight deck. We rushed thru the recording on the various planes & helicopters, & never got to visit the bridge or the admiral’s quarters because it was too close to closing time. My hubby found the elevator on the flight deck to take us back down. Wish he’d found it BEFORE we took the stairs UP to the flight deck! We look forward to going back to finish the tour. Now I need to contact a nephew who served a tour onboard another ship in a Marine detachment. I want to hear HIS stories!
