If you're one of the readers who said they'll splurge on a trip if they find something worth it here are some splurge-worthy ideas for a place to sleep, a fine meal and a super-relaxing spa treatment:
- Call me biased (I got married there), but for a romantic splurge, you can't beat Catalina Island's Inn on Mt. Ada, especially the Wrigley Suite. Everyone gets an electric cart to drive around town, the views are super and the staff is more than accommodating, too.
- For a fine meal in an intimate setting, try the "spontaneous chef's tasting menu," described only by a list of ingredients, in the dining room at L'Auberge Carmel. It ranks among the best meals we've had anywhere.
- You can get a spa treatment for less money, but in my experience, they don't come any better than at Cavallo Point, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. After their signature massage, we advise against driving - your relaxed state just won't be up to it.
