San Gregorio Beach

By Betsy Malloy, About.com

San Gregorio Beach, the country's oldest nude beach (since 1967), is a large popular beach with sand, caves and more. The entrance to the parking lot is very hard to find. Pay close attention.
Cautions: Stay in the nude section north of the Hazardous Surf sign, or the rangers may cite you.
Location: San Mateo County
Description:
  • Two miles of soft sand, caves cliffs, driftwood
  • Long, wide and clean
  • Privately owned, admission charged
  • Mike reported in June, 2003: "The two gentleman that I have encountered who run this beach have managed to keep this beach spotless. There is never any garbage anywhere, as I have a habit of picking up trash on any beach I visit. Not here."
Who's at San Gregorio Beach:
  • 50-100 people thinly spread out
  • Popular with gay men - straights gravitate to the south end
  • Bill reported on a visit in June, 2002: "The large beach also seemed mostly deserted, but you find that most of its residents are in the dozens driftwood hooches that line the base of the cliff. I saw only one nude woman and dozens of nude men in singles and pairs."
San Gregorio Beach Facilities: Chemical toilets
San Gregorio Beach Activities: Surf fishing, tidepooling. Swimming not recommended
Getting to San Gregorio Beach: San Gregorio Beach Map and Driving Directions
San Gregorio Beach Rating: See what others think.

Laws regarding nudity at the naturist beach vary by location and fines are stiff in some places. I have made every effort to provide accurate information, but the responsibility for knowing the law at San Gregorio Beach is yours.

Nude or naturist beach neophytes, please be respectful of others and read the Nude Beach and Topless Beach Etiquette guidelines before you go to a nude beach and check the nudity laws too.
