This California map book is my constant reference, and it's always in the car when I travel in California. It may be overkill for someone taking a short vacation, though.

A hand-drawn California map that shows the major locations and sights. It's one of the best for discovering where things lie in relation to each other, and beautiful enough to display on the wall.
