Phoenix, Arizona
Visitor Information - Phoenix, Arizona

By , About.com Guide

Phoenix, located in central Arizona, is the state's largest metropolitan area and the sixth-largest city in the United States with a population of 2.8 million.

Getting to Phoenix

Many airlines serve the Phoenix International Airport. Drivers can reach Phoenix on I-10 from Tucson or Los Angeles, or on I-17 from Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon.

If you normally use AAA maps when you travel, I strongly recommend you find some other Phoenix city map. The AAA Phoenix map is very hard to use, with street names strung out over 2-3 map folds, streets missing altogether and confusing annotations.

Things to Do

Allow at least two days to cover Phoenix's top attractions, and up to a week if you use Phoenix as a base to explore the surrounding area, or if you want to spend time at one of the area's 190-plus golf courses or award-winning spas.

Phoenix Day Trips

To the south, a day trip loop leads to Mount Lemmon, or you can explore these places on your way between Phoenix and Tucson. Other locations accessible from Phoenix in a day include:

  • Sedona: Art galleries, red rocks, hiking, vortexes.
  • Arcosanti: an experimental town, designed by architect Paolo Saleri for 5,000 inhabitants.
  • Jerome: Former copper mining town
