Red sandstone buttes and eroded rock formations are the center of this popular city park. Many of its trails are easy to hike. The park's highest elevation, on the buttes, is about 1,700 feet high, but the hiking rails are around 1,200 feet elevation.
The red rock buttes are made of sedimentary rock, and the holes in them are formed by water. The Hohokam people may have been the first to notice that a hole in the ceiling of Hole-in-the-Rock creates a ray of light that moves during the year. Evidence suggests that they marked the summer and winter solstices here, and well as the equinoxes.
