We are sorry to report that in February, 2009, Hershey's (who had bought the Joseph Schmidt company in 2005) announced that they would stop producing the brand. We're keeping this article online as a remembrance of a fine little San Francisco candy company.

When Joseph Schmidt talked about his chocolate, he said with pride: "It's what I was born to do". In the 1980s, he started experimenting with chocolate in his kitchen and today his company produces over 200,000 chocolate Easter bunnies and 10 million chocolate truffles a year.

Every one of his creations was a work of art - glistening chocolate, beautifully decorated and packaged in equally beautiful containers. Tender loving care was evident everywhere and Schmidt told me it was the ingredient that made the chocolates so beautiful.

Schmidt's signature product was the egg-shaped truffle, but his real genius was in shaping chocolate in ways mere mortals would never dream of. One of his signature creations was the chocolate bowl. Glistening white chocolate layered inside dark, airbrushed with heart-shaped designs, they looked more like fine porcelain than something edible.

When people first saw Schmidt's rather large truffles, they often commented that they were too big, but after one bite they foundnd them so delicious that they asked for three more. In fact, the only thing better than the beauty of these confections was their taste. When someone commented that the chocolates were too beautiful to eat, Schmidt responded: "Don't be afraid."
