Most Santa Fe visitors fly into Albuquerque, where there are more major airline options and more frequent flights. It's only about an hour's drive north from Albuquerque to Santa Fe.

For seeing the heart of Santa Fe, a car is not required; everything is close together, within easy walking distance. Parking in the Plaza area is scarce and somewhat costly. Many hotels are located within the historic center of Santa Fe, and within walking distance of the Plaza, galleries, shops and several museums; and others (such as the Hotel Santa Fe) offer convenient shuttle service. The Santa Fe Trails bus also runs from the Plaza to Museum Hill. However, if you want to take any side trips, you'll need a vehicle.

Santa Fe's elevation is 7,000 feet. The air is very dry, and the sun is more intense than at sea level. Bring a high-SPF sunscreen and use it liberally. Be sure to bring lots of moisturizing products for all part of your body - skin, hair and eyes. Taking two showers a day also helps to keep you from feeling parched. If you are susceptible to altitude sickness, take it easy for the first couple of days, drinking plenty of water, avoiding exertion, trips to higher altitudes and alcohol.
