About the Hotel Listings

By Betsy Malloy, About.com

There are hundreds of thousands of hotel rooms in California. They range from very cheap to very expensive. Some are good values, some are not. As a frequent traveler myself, I know that it's almost impossible to make a good decision about choosing a hotel in a distant city when all you have is a list of all the hotels. Because of this, I don't list the web site of every hotel in the city in my hotel links. Every hotel that is on one of our lists has to pass at least one of these tests:
  1. I stayed there personally and found it to be a good value
  2. Earned at least a rating of 3.5 or higher from reviewers at Tripadvisor
  3. Price is in line with its rating
  4. When all else fails, cleanliness wins

Wherever I can find the information, I always list parking charges and local hotel tax rates. Use this information to calculate the WHOLE cost of staying at the hotel. Parking rates can be as high as $35 per day or more at some hotels in the cities.

Since people are different and like information presented in different ways, I have sorted the hotel listings by location and by their characteristics (romantic, view, etc,).

Finally, to help you get the best accommodations for your money, I link to the place that is likely to yield the lowest rate. Sometimes, this is the hotel itself, and other times it's a price comparison site.
