  • Monarch Butterflies, Pacific Grove: The orange-and-black butterflies spend their winters in the trees around town

  • Chefs' Holidays, Yosemite: Held in sessions over several weeks, this holiday is all about food with cooking demonstrations and a not-to-be-missed gala dinner

  • Eagle Watch Cruises, Lake San Antonio: A great way to see the eagles soaring in their winter home

  • Elephant Seals, Ano Nuevo State Reserve: Males fight for dominance while newborns grow at an astounding rate, making an unforgettable spectacle. you can also see the elephant seals at Piedras Blancas near Hearst Castle

  • Whale-Watching: Winter is migration time for many whale species and you'll find cruises going out from most coastal locations.

  • Chinese New Year Parade, San Francisco: The lunar holiday occurs in late January or early February and San Francisco holds the most extravagant celebration in the state.
