Yellowstone National Park Hotels
Visitor Guide to Yellowstone National Park Hotels

By Betsy Malloy, About.com

People have been staying in Yellowstone National Park Hotels since the late 1800s, in the days when visitors arrived by train and toured the park in a stagecoach. Today, you will find the Yellowstone National Park hotels still spaced about 30 to 40 miles apart, the distance a stagecoach can travel in a day.

Choosing Among the Yellowstone National Park Hotels

Choose where you will stay based on which park entrance you plan to use, and what you plan to do. Consider planning a loop trip, staying each night at a different place. Using this plan, you don't have to backtrack each night, and you can spend more time in each location. For a three-day visit, Canyon Village, Mammoth Hot Springs and Old Faithful are good choices.

Yellowstone National Park hotels are clustered in six areas of the park. These links will take you to detailed information about each area, including what you will find nearby and what kind of lodging is available.

In general, I have found all the Yellowstone National Park hotels and cabins to be clean and well-maintained. Some are newer than others, and have newer decor, more room or better views. None of the Yellowstone National Park hotels has televisions or telephones in the rooms.

If you prefer to stay outside the park (or find that the Yellowstone National Park hotels are all full), the towns of Gardiner and West Yellowstone are the only ones located close enough to the park to be practical. One advantage to staying in West Yellowstone or Gardiner is that there is no state sales tax in Montana (Yellowstone National Park hotels and stores charge Wyoming sales tax)

Use the lists below, along with the links above, to help you choose among the Yellowstone National Park hotels. It may be helpful to have our Yellowstone map on hand while you're looking.
