How to Get Around Lake Tahoe

By , About.com Guide

See More About:
With more people flocking to Lake Tahoe every year, it's getting harder and harder to keep the lake the pristine, blue, watery jewel it once was, and exhaust from vehicles is one of the contributors to its decline. You can do your part by using buses or shuttles as much as possible instead of driving yourself.

Getting Around Lake Tahoe

Besides driving yourself, you'll find a number of local bus and shuttle services around Lake Tahoe. It's a bit of a confusing patchwork across two states, but they include:
  • TART (Tahoe Area Regional Transit): operates along 30 miles of Lake Tahoe shoreline, with year-round and seasonal routes and schedules, including a night trolley Squaw Valley and Incline Village and a summer-only bus during the day between Northstar and Crystal Bay.

  • Tahoe Trolley: serves Tahoe City, Squaw Valley, Tahoe Vista, Kings Beach, Crystal Bay and Incline Village.

  • Truckee Trolley: runs from Truckee to several locations, including Northstar Village and Kings Beach.

  • BlueGo: offers regularly scheduled buses and seasonal ski shuttles in the town of South Lake Tahoe. They also operate the Nifty Fifty Trolley, which runs from Camp Richardson through South Shore to Stateline, Nevada (summer only).
There's also a water taxi service to the north and east shores of Lake Tahoe.
