Northstar at Tahoe Resort
Visiting Northstar at Tahoe

By , About.com Guide

The face of Northstar at Tahoe is changing. Whether you've been there before or not, you should know that North Lake Tahoe resort is in the midst of a major renovation, transforming itself into a destination resort that, except for the skiing, will bear little resemblance to its predecessor. A new village has sprung up at the base of the mountain, with new rental condos, shops, restaurants and a nice selection of outdoor activities.

New developments will be completed in phases. Schedules may slip, but as of this writing in April, 2006, Phase I was expected to be done by July, 2006, when half of the retail space will be completed. Businesses will start to occupy Phase II shops by February, 2007, and the new Ritz Carlton hotel will be completed in 2009. When it's all done, there will be about 40 shops and restaurants here.

Northstar at Tahoe Year Round

Any time of the year, The Village provides a selection of restaurants, outdoor activities and some nice, locally-owned shops. Active visitors will also like the bungee trampoline and climbing wall. Open to lodging guests and homeowners, the Recreation Center boasts a heated pool, outdoor spas, kids's game room and fitness center.

You'll also find a gas station here, with prices that are lower than you may find nearer the lake.

Northstar at Tahoe in Winter

Northstar at Tahoe has long been known as a family-friendly ski resort, and we rate it best at Lake Tahoe for family skiing and snowboarding. Base elevation is 6,330 feet (1,929 meters), the summit is at 8,610 feet (2,624 meters), and average annual snowfall is 350 inches (9 meters). Northstar at Tahoe is the only area ski resort that offers free, overnight ski check to everyone.

Moderate-pitched, well-groomed Mt. Pluto is the family skiing place here, while intermediate skiers like Schaffer's Camp. The Backside provides long, uninterrupted runs of groomed powder and bumps and Lookout Mountain offers plenty of steeps and tree skiing. A wide variety of terrain parks are available for snowboarders and freestyle skiers.

Learn to ski with the Learn to Ride program or improve your skills during the free, daily Free Ride Sessions, any time except peak periods mid-December through mid-January and the second week of February.

Other winter activities include ice skating, cross-country skiing and tubing.

Northstar at Tahoe in Summer

If you've never thought of Northstar at Tahoe as a summer destination, you should. Located just a few miles north of Kings Beach and Tahoe's north shore, it offers some of the most comfortable lodging in the area, much nicer shopping than you'll find at the lake, and it's just far enough away from the lake to be quieter and less crowded. In the summer here, you can go mountain biking, play tennis, go rollerskating (using old-fashioned, "real" roller skates), and watch outdoor movies in the evening.
