South Lake Tahoe is the name of the California town that sits on the lake's edge at the state border, but the larger South Lake Tahoe area include Stateline, Nevada and the California state parks along CA Hwy 89.
By far the biggest town in the area, South Lake Tahoe is where most of the biggest hotels and casinos are, with the casinos on the Nevada side of the border.
Things to Do in South Lake Tahoe
South Lake Tahoe has the most things to do of any place around the lake:- Heavenly Resort's gondola touches down right in the middle of South Lake Tahoe town and it's a fun ride to a great view, whether you plan to ski after you get up there or not
- Try your luck at the South Lake Tahoe casinos
- Most of the scenic lake cruises take off from South Lake Tahoe and it's a great way to enjoy a day
- In South Lake Tahoe, you can find a place to rent almost any kind of watercraft you can think of, from a paddle boat to a cruiser that seats seven. Take your pick and go for a ride
- You'll find a collection of factory stores in South Lake Tahoe near "the Y" (intersection of Hwy 50 and Hwy 89)
To continue your driving tour after leaving South Lake Tahoe, take US Hwy 50 through South Lake Tahoe, then turn north on CA Hwy 89 north toward Tahoe City.
