Description:

The Portofino Hotel is located on the Redondo Beach Marina.

Pats and Pans:

One of the biggest complaints of online reviewers is that they expected the Portofino to be an oceanfront hotel, which it is not. It is located inside the marina breakwater, with water on one side. Rooms with marina views also overlook the parking lot and toward a nearby electric power plant. Some say it's the best ever while others say it's worth it only if you get a good rate.

Review:

The Portofino Hotel sits inside the Redondo Beach Marina, just yards from the Santa Monica Bay, between the marina and the sea wall. While it's not quite a beachfront property, it's a very convenient and comfortable place to stay that's near Redondo Beach, the pier and other oceanside amusements. It's also within easy walking distance of good restaurants.

The Portofino's beautiful lobby/living room features a fireplace centered between floor-to-ceiling windows. The lobby bar here opens in the afternoon every day except Monday, and this comfortable space is a great place to have a drink and watch the sun set.

The Portofino offers both marina-side and oceanside rooms and all of them have private balconies. To be sure you aren't disappointed, you should know that the oceanside rooms face the ocean, but are inside the marina's stone breakwater wall. On the marina side, there's a parking lot between the hotel and the marina. Beyond the marina is an electric power-generating facility that has a beautiful ocean-themed mural by artist Wyland, called the Whaling Wall. First-floor rooms on either side of the hotel have limited views.

A renovation completed in late 2006 outfitted rooms with counter-mounted vessel bowl sinks, black granite counter tops and an ocean-inspired color palette (a relief from the taupe-and-brown that most LA hotels are sporting these days). Besides the expected amenities, you'll find earplugs in case the resident sea lions get too loud.

Proximity to the water is the Portofino's best asset, but it's also close enough to restaurants, the Redondo Beach Pier and the oceanfront walk that you could check in, spend the weekend and never have to get into your car - quite a rarity in busy Los Angeles.
