Wine and Chocolate in Napa and Sonoma
How to Combine Wine and Chocolate

By Betsy Malloy, About.com

Napa and Sonoma wine country is as much of a haven of good food as it is good wine. As California's chocolate makers are on the rise, it's not surprising that wine and chocolate come to the forefront in Napa. These are some opportunities to enjoy Napa's best chocolatiers, pick up some goodies to take home or learn more about how chocolate and wine can go together.

Napa and Sonoma Chocolate Makers

Annette's Chocolate Factory on First Street in downtown Napa offers a variety of chocolate sauces made with wines and liqueurs.

At Vintage Sweet Shoppe in Napa's Hatt Mill, the Dever Family creates wine-filled chocolate truffles

At Woodhouse Chocolate in St. Helena, the chocolate candies are as pretty as they are tasty, miniature works of the chocolatier's art, displayed in cases that would be at home in Tiffany's.

Peju Province winery sells wine-infused chocolate sauces and Prager Portworks in St. Helena makes a wonderful port-and-chocolate drizzle and port-filled chocolates, too.

Wine Country Chocolates has two Sonoma locations where they've adapted the "tasting room" concept to their confections.

Wine and Chocolate Pairing

Several wineries offer wine and chocolate tastings, among them (at the time this was written) Del Dotto and Castello di Amorosa (with some tasting options).

Your best bet is to do it yourself, getting your chocolate and wine during your day's adventures. Picking the right pair isn't easy, but these tips will help you do it.

You'll also find some of California's best chocolate makers in San Francisco.
