About the Pacific Adventure Tours Hummer Ride

Pacific Adventure's Hummer fleet includes both commercial and military models. We rode in am open-topped, military-style Hummer that looked like it was equally ready to go to war or take six intrepid tourists on a ride. Designed to handle terrain much rougher than a big pile of sand, the Hummer can go almost straight down the backside of a dune, climb at impossibly steep angles and sometimes felt like it was going in circles on just two wheels. The tour provided plenty of excitement, but wisely, our driver paused every once in a while to give us time to appreciate the dunes' beauty.

We rate the Hummer tour among the most fun things we've done. If you were on the dunes the day we rode, you would have heard this fifty-something travel writer whooping with excitement like a teenager at an amusement park.

Tips for Taking the Hummer Ride

You'll encounter a lot of flying sand and dust during your Hummer tour, and it's colder at the beach than in town. These tips will help you enjoy your tour to the fullest:
  • The ride is rough, with lots of sudden changes in speed and direction. Your bottom may occasionally leave the seat cushion. If you have any condition that might be aggravated by this, don't go.
  • If you wear contact lenses, consider removing them or ask your driver for a pair of goggles to wear.
  • If you are susceptible to motion sickness, bring your favorite remedy.
  • Wear plenty of sunscreen. The dunes reflect a lot of light and it's easy to get burned.
  • Wear clothing you don't mind getting dirty, and wear an extra jacket to keep warm.
  • Make the Hummer tour your last activity for the day, or allow time afterward if it's earlier. You will need a shower to get rid of all the sand, which will be in your hair, ears and everywhere else.
