Glorietta Bay Inn Review:

Just because you're not a millionaire doesn't mean you can't live like one, at least for a few days. On San Diego's Coronado Island, the 1920s mansion built by John D. Spreckels (who once owned all of Coronado) is the centerpiece of the Glorietta Bay Inn. It's a lovely, elegant, white mansion, situated on high ground with a great view of the bay and marina below. Thanks to meticulous renovation that created 11 guest rooms, you can enjoy Spreckels' house in its original 1920s splendor.

With fewer rooms to look after than larger hotels and an obvious zeal for making people happy, the Glorietta Bay Inn staff have time to provide the personalized, attentive service that has won them awards. Rooms are spotlessly clean, and the pillow-topped mattresses comfortable. To top it all, if the place weren't so great in every other way, the views would steal the show.

Surrrounding The Mansion are 89 contemporary rooms, added in the early twentieth century. They have individual balconies or patios, are clean, well-maintained and a good value for the money, but the Mansion rooms are the real treat here. Reserve the Spreckels Suite if you have the budget, or for an even bigger splurge, Spreckels' third floor solarium is now a 1,000-square-foot penthouse with some of the best views on Coronado Island.

With competitive (if not downright low) prices for a hotel of its quality and taking into account Coronado's hotel tax rate which is lower than the comparable tax in San Diego, we rate the Glorietta Bay Inn a Best Buy.
