San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter Review:

The third in Marriott's central San Diego hotel triple crown is a swankier, more sophisticated hotel than we've come to expect from this chain. It's located in the up-and-coming area of downtown near the Convention Center and overlooks the baseball park. The lowest floor with rooms on it is the 9th floor, and every room has a view. If the Padres are playing at home, fans should ask for a room overlooking the park.

The twenty-second-story, rooftop Altitude Skybar and Garden Lounge affords unobstructed views of downtown, the Coronado Bridge, Pacific Ocean and everything else for miles around. Meals are in a more down-to-earth location, in Soleil@k, a street-level restaurant with outdoor seating that Epicurious says "maintains a vaulting lead" among downtown restaurants vying for San Diego’s "trendiest dining" trophy. Surprisingly, the menu is reasonably priced and an even bigger surprise is the pink cotton candy that arrives with the check - much more fun than a tired old peppermint.

Rooms are stylishly decorated and feature the "bed from Marriott" with down comforters and 300-count linens. They're quiet, except for the noise an occasional trolley passing nearby. The hotel is also extraordinarily clean.

All of this does not come without a price. Room rates start around $200 per night, and if you're traveling with a car and computer, parking fees and wireless Internet access charges can set you back almost $35 per day.
