May: Bay to Breakers Race
It's one of the most popular 12K races in the country and famous for the inventive costumes people wear while running (as well as for the few brave runners who wear nothing at all). The route goes from The Embarcadero, across town, through Golden Gate Park and ends at the ocean. Held the third weekend in May.

An Italian-themed street fair, with good food and music. Fun extras include Assisi Animal Blessings and Arte di Gesso (Italian street chalk art). Washington Square Park, 1200-1500 blocks of Grant Avenue and adjacent streets in North Beach.
