Washington Square Inn San Francisco

About.com Rating fourhalf out of Five

By Betsy Malloy, About.com

The Bottom Line

The Washington Square Inn is a comfortable, well-appointed boutique hotel that's just far enough off the tourist track to seem exclusive, yet close enough that all the top attractions are easy to get to. Its price is on par with other hotels of comparable quality.
Pros
  • Everything is just-out-of-the-wrapper clean
  • Excellent, central location in North Beach
  • Quiet
  • Extra-soft sheets and comfortable beds
Cons
  • Parking is difficult, but less expensive than at hotels elsewhere in the city
  • Best for relaxing vacations or getaways, but not so convenient for the business traveler

Guide Review - Washington Square Inn San Francisco

I've been interested in the Washington Square Inn since I first started giving North Beach tours some years ago, and it did not disappoint.

First, there's the location. Its spot on the corner of Washington Square just across the street from Mama's cafe and Liguria Bakery makes staying there feel more like dropping into your own pied-a-terre than checking into a hotel room.

Owners Maria and Daniel Levin have created a comfortable, intimate hotel in the midst of North Beach's hustle-bustle, a good place to charge up in the morning with a cup of Caffe Roma coffee or relax in the evening with wine and appetizers before going out on the town. The rooms are impressively clean and the beds comfortable, with linens that make the "luxury" sheets other hotels tout seem ordinary by comparison.

The Washington Square Inn is a good choice for women traveling alone or anyone concerned about safety. Its front door is locked 24 hours a day and only guests can enter.

If you you like the Washington Square Inn, you may also enjoy other Unique Inns in California such as the Inn at Occidental, Eureka's Carter House or Carmel's Vagabond's House.
