Bodie is a late 1800s gold rush town, abandoned some years later when the mine played out. At its peak, it had more than 10,000 residents and its main street was a mile long. Today, the town has about 300 buildings and is maintained by the State of California in "arrested decay". They don't fix anything up, but they don't let it get any worse either.
If you want to go to Bodie, use the Bodie visitor guide - it will tell you when it's open, how to get there, how long to stay and you can find out what to expect.
