Bridgeport Inn Review:

A family-owned hotel run by the Peters family, the Bridgeport Inn started in 1877 when Hiram Leavitt built it as a stop for travelers headed for the gold mines at nearby Bodie. Today, after being in business continuously, it serves as a stop for people traveling on US 395.

The Bridgeport Inn offers rooms in the historic hotel as well as motel-style rooms, all of them kept very clean. If you don't mind carrying your luggage up the stairs, the historic rooms are charming and quite comfortable. On a strict budget? The stagecoach rooms share a bath down the hall and are very inexpensive. Father-and-son owners Bob and John Peters strive to maintain the Inn's historic character while making improvements every year since they bought the place in 1999.

No matter what room you stay in or whether you just stop in as you pass through town, you'll find the bar friendly with a great selection of oldies on the juke box, and some people say the parlor remind them of grandmother's house. The restaurant menu retains many of the dishes that previous owners made popular, turning out delicious favorites such as prime rib and rack of lamb.

Like most old hotels in the west, the Bridgeport Inn has its own ghost story, a "white lady" who legend says is the spirit of a young woman who hanged herself after her fiance was killed in a stageocoach accident. Owner Bob Peters says he's never seen her despite living in the hotel for a year, but he knows "perfectly sane, rational people" who say they have.

The Bridgeport Inn is located right on US 395 in downtown Bridgeport.
