Santa Clara County lies at the south end of the San Francisco Bay and includes the city of San Jose, whose hotels are listed separately. It will help if you know where you want to go and choose your hotel accordingly. This summary of its cities may help. However, it focuses only on the part of Santa Clara that is commonly called Silicon Valley.

- Mountain View: Also primarily a business center but with a lively downtown, Mountain View is Google headquarters and also home to Mozilla Corporation, AOL, Intuit, Silicon Graphics, Spectra-Physics, and NASA Ames Research Center.
- Milpitas: Located on the east side of the San Francisco Bay, Milpitas is the site of the Great Mall discount shopping center and corporate headquarters of Maxtor, PalmOne, Sipex, LSI Logic, Solectron and Adaptec.
- Palo Alto: Best known as the home of Stanford University, Palo Alto is also home to Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Hanna House and Filoli Gardens.
- Santa Clara: Home of Santa Clara University, Mission Santa Clara de Asis, Paramount's Great America amusement park and headquarters of Intel, Applied Materials and Sun Microsystems.
- Sunnyvale: Primarily a business center, Sunnyvale is headquarters to Palm, Inc., AMD, Yahoo!, Northrop Grumman Mission Systems and Lockheed Martin as well as the now-decommissioned Moffett Field and still-active Onizuka Air Force Station.
- Campbell, Los Gatos, Saratoga: Located at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountains, these communities are more residential than commercial, although Netflix makes its home in Los Gatos. Los Gatos and Saratoga are especially popular with locals for shopping and dining, and make a nice spot for a quick getaway.
