San Jose is a city of a million people, spread over a large area. It will help if you know where you want to go and choose your hotel accordingly. This summary of areas may help, and so will a good map.
- Downtown: The convention center is here, as well as the HP Pavilion (where the San Jose Sharks hockey team plays), the Performing Arts Center, San Jose State University and the headquarters of Adobe Corporation. The San Jose Jazz Festival is held downtown, as is the Cinequest film festival.
- Airport: Other than a few corporate headquarters (Yahoo, eBay, Intel), there's not much else very close to the airport.
- Santana Row: The Hotel Valencia is a good place for a weekend of shopping, dining and entertainment. It's also close to the Winchester Mystery House.
- Santa Clara University: It's actually in the town of Santa Clara, but hotels on The Alameda street will be close.
