Just across from the Disney Hall will be one of downtown Los Angeles' most exciting new developments, the Grand Avenue Project. Designed by Disney Concert Hall architect Frank O. Gehry, it will include a 50-story tower that will house both residences and a new Mandarin Oriental Hotel, along with shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. A part of the Los Angeles of the future, the center's 2,000 planned residences will continue a trend that began around the turn of the 21st century, as downtown transitions back toward a more residential area.

The first phase of the Grand Avenue Project was scheduled to be completed in late 2010, but economic woes have pushed that date out to 2011 or later, according to the Los Angeles Times. Thanks to the Los Angeles County Convention and Visitors Bureau, you can get an idea of what it will look like from the architect's model in the picture.

According to LA Weekly, billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad has chosen a site on Grand Avenue to house a museum featuring his collection of modern art, which is rumored to be finished by 2012.
