If you follow the road out toward Morro Rock, you'll find a kelp bed near the rocks that seems to be a favorite place for the sea otters to take a nap. They wrap themselves up in the kelp leaves to keep from floating away, the lie on their backs and snooze. On the August afternoon when I shot this photo, two mother otters were sleeping with their half-grown babies on their tummies. Bring binoculars to get a close-up view like this, and if you want to get a close-up photo, you'll need at least a 400mm lens.
